Terracotta Pots – What Most People Forget to Do At First Use

Everyone has had one of them at home or in the garden: terracotta pots. But did you know that terracotta does something bad for your plants? Luckily we have a handy trick to prevent it.

Terracotta pots look always lovely, no matter how old-fashioned they may be. It’s those warm earth tones that add a retro touch to the green of the plants and your home.

But… there’s something very important to take into account with a terracotta plant pot.

Like a sponge

Terracotta is made of a very dry and porous type of pottery that absorbs water quickly. That’s why it is very important to always put a new terracotta pot in a layer of water first so that it is completely soaked.

Why is this important? If you don’t do this and water your plant, the pottery will soak the water immediately before the plant has been able to benefit from it. Of course that is not what you want!

So clay pots need to be soaked first. When you are done, water your pot plant as usual. Now, the water simply goes straight to the plant. Your plants will thank you!
